THE ORIGIN OF ICELANDIC OASIS
in the Highlands of Iceland

One day in August 1980, two young  architect guys set out from Reykjavik to place a corner-stone for the foundation of a new city in the highlands of Iceland.

At that time nothing pointed to it that a new city would ever be built there. As a matter of fact this sounded more like a science-fiction story than a architectonic enterprise.

Still the younger guy, Trausti Valsson, had figured it out that judging from the common laws of town formations there was no way around it that at certain crossroads in the higlands of Iceland, a forbidden zone for most icelanders even today, a town would form. Perhaps after his day, but in any case in the 21st century.

So Trausti had a plaque made for the historic event. On it it said: H-borg (H-city) with the date of his deceased fathers birthday. The new title is however Icelandic Oasis for what is planned today.

The older guy, Einar Thorsteinn, went along out of curiosity and also because he had been involved with Trausti in many other timeless enterprizes, however most with less consequences than this one.

Twenty six years passed by without much changes, but then came the next step for this enterprise. Suddenly there was a new need in the now global world. Well to do people now wanted to have many options for their habitations. And they wanted to have secure places, and climatic controlled places to stay in from time to time, next to an airport.

The nearer to the western world such places were, the better. A flying distance of 4 – 5 hours was OK. There was also the possibility that the ozon layer of the planet was opening up too much to be able to keep out the cosmic rays. So a habitation under a glass roof would perhaps be needed soon. For this the now planned Icelandic Oasis offers many good options. One is an unused geothermal area next to its location and lots of hot water beneath the surface of the same area.

It was in fact only the matter of some planning to get these matters under “one roof”. Here at the end of this slide show you can see some of the first results.
